Let's Go Behind the Scenes

Ever wonder what sets performances apart or how I prepare to play at a wedding versus a corporate event? Wonder no more! I’m giving you an inside look…and sharing some June event highlights while I’m at it.

Corporate Events

Inside Scoop: I know you’re not supposed to have favorites, but I can’t help it! I LOVE corporate events. Guests are often expecting little to no entertainment, so it’s a total trip to see them light up when they spot an electric violinist!

Types of Corporate Events:

    • Conferences & conventions
    • Sales meetings
    • Cocktail or dinner receptions
    • Fundraisers & galas
    • Employee or client appreciation parties
    • And many other variations…

Set List: I always have many more songs planned than I actually need, so I can read the room and choose the genres that get the best response. With most corporate events I’m not necessarily trying to get people out on the dance floor. I’m just trying to help everybody relax and unwind. Also, I love to find out if the CEO has a favorite band or singer so I can surprise him or her with one of their favorite songs.

What to Wear: My outfits are usually less formal and more creative. I try to learn a little about the company culture so I have a better sense of my audience. Edgy? Conservative? Flamboyant? I’m a chameleon!

Weddings

Inside Scoop: I’ve played for close to 2,000 weddings in my life! They are like snowflakes — no two are alike. From intimate backyard ceremonies to massive parties with a thousand guests, weddings can take so many different forms.

Types of Wedding Events:

    • Ceremony
    • Cocktail hour
    • Reception
    • Rehearsal dinner
    • Sangeet/Baarat/etc.

Set List: I’m far more likely to have special song requests at weddings and I often collaborate with a DJ or drummer. The biggest factor when choosing wedding music is the wide range of ages. From youngsters to great-grandparents, I try to make sure no one is left out by playing songs from every decade from the 1930s to the 2020s.

What to Wear: My outfits range from classy and conservative to flashy and fun depending on the personality of the couple and the event. I always try to find out the color scheme ahead of time so I can coordinate my outfit to complement the room and decor.

Social Events

Inside Scoop: This is really a catch all category. It could literally be any type of celebration or gathering that brings people together for a good time!

Types of Social Events:

    • Birthday parties
    • Anniversaries
    • Private concerts
    • Dinner parties
    • Proposals
    • Engagement parties
    • Festivals
    • Baby showers
    • Bridal showers
    • And soooooo many others!

Set List: With over 2,000 songs to choose from, I’ve got a mix for every occasion. From background music for a quiet dinner to a full on dance party, this can take so many forms. Again, it’s often about reading the crowd to figure out what’s working. And variety. Always lots of variety!

What to Wear: Just like my setlist, my wardrobe selections are as unique as the event. I try to get a sense of what the guests will be wearing, but when in doubt I always prefer to be overdressed.
